Thirty-Eight

Sonya’s out of the picture. This is my life. This is my plan, and it’s down to me to make sure that justice is served. I picture Erik’s face just before… I can’t think about that right now but the thought of him won’t leave me. The fear, how he reached out to me and held me like he knew that something big was happening.

I watch from beyond. Sitting at the other end of the park. From round this corner, I can just about see all I need to see. Faith stands up to help Harvey into the little wooden house, then she goes back to staring at her phone, blankly. Little Kiara is happily sitting at her feet, playing with some bright plastic toys while she dribbles melted chocolate biscuit down her chin.

Glancing back at Harvey, I see that he’s wrapped up nicely in his winter coat. The fake fur-lined hood almost covers the top of his eyes. He’s looking down.

Faith’s phone rings and she steps away from Kiara and walks towards the park gate. She thinks just because they are seemingly alone, her children are safe. Too many people don’t treat their little ones like the precious cargo that they are. It’s okay for Faith. If Harvey or Kiara go, she can have another child. She’s young and healthy. She’ll move on. I try not to think about how I’ve affected Sonya. There will always be casualties and that’s all she is. There are bigger things at play and they must play out. We all have to suffer the consequences of our actions and I know I will have to suffer mine soon too. There’s no escaping that, which is why I need to get everything sorted without any more hitches. Sonya was perfect, she responded perfectly but I pushed her too far. If only I hadn’t sent her that message but I needed to make her pay. I only hope Faith will be the same in that respect. What parent wouldn’t do anything to save their child? If they wouldn’t do anything, they don’t deserve to be parents.

Harvey soon gets bored of the wooden house and he’s exploring further. Jumping on the roundabout, he uses his one foot to gather momentum but he doesn’t spin for more than a few seconds. ‘Mummy, push me,’ he calls out. His mum ignores him. In fact, she opens the gate and goes out of the park. She’s becoming animated and teary, even raises her voice for a few seconds. I wonder who she’s talking to on her phone. One of her motivation lady friends or maybe a lover; everyone but her stupid husband knew she had one.

The girl is wandering, she goes to a little bouncy elephant and tries to climb on. She’s too small and can’t do it on her own. ‘Harvey,’ she calls, but the boy ignores her, so she keeps trying. This is where I hope she doesn’t slip. A crying child would ruin my plan.

Girl or boy? I have a choice.
